Linate, the most convenient airport for the city of Milan

The M4 line is a Milan metro line, still under construction, which currently (August 2024) connects the temporary western terminus of San Babila, located in the square of the same name, with a direct interchange with the M1 line, and the Linate Aeroporto stop, the eastern terminus, in the municipality of Segrate, with an interchange with the airport of the same name. Once completed, the line will extend towards the south-west area of ​​the city, with its definitive terminus at San Cristoforo FS.

The line is expected to fall entirely within the urban tariff area of ​​Milan, including the terminus of Linate Airport, which is geographically located in the municipal territory of Segrate.

The M4 is also called the blue line, as it is indicated on the maps with this color; blue is also the main color used in the furnishings of the stations and trains.

The fifth metro line to be built in Milan, as well as the second conceived as a light metro, it crosses the M1 line at the San Babila station and will in the future cross the M2 line at the Sant’Ambrogio station. On 7 September 2016, following a petition by citizens, the municipality of Milan had initially announced the construction of a pedestrian underpass to connect the Sforza Policlinico station of line 4 to the Missori station of line M3; however, in the final project it was then decided to have a surface connection, taking advantage of the pedestrianization of the area. There will be no interchange with the M5 line, making the M4 the first line of the Milan metro not to intersect with all the other existing lines at the time of its construction. The line currently also intersects with some lines of the suburban network at the Dateo and Forlanini stations and, once completed, will gain another interchange with the railway network at the San Cristoforo station, served by both regional and suburban trains.

The opening is taking place in stages, starting from November 26, 2022 until December 2024, although the Municipality of Milan aims to open the last section by September 2024.
